Dash camera video shows the heroic efforts of two Travelers Rest, S.C. police officers to rescue a driver who later died.

Cpl. Mason Johnson found the wreck while on patrol on Sunday around 5 a.m. on Highway 25 and was soon joined by Officer Matt Nodine, according to WYFF-TV.

Johnson called for fire and EMS support as he checked the condition of the two drivers involved in the wreck. One of the drivers was unresponsive and pinned in his vehicle while the other was conscious but had injuries preventing him from exiting his pickup.

A fire erupted in the engine compartment of the unresponsive driver's vehicle after Nodine arrived on the scene. Both of the officers used their fire extinguishers to put the fire out, but it continued to burn.

The fire eventually grew to the point that it began to engulf the driver's compartment, and the officers felt they had to remove the driver from the vehicle for his safety," Police Chief Lance Crowe said.

Firefighters quickly arrived and were able to put out the flames and safely remove the other driver from his vehicle.

The unresponsive driver was flown to Greenville Memorial Hospital where he died.

The Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the wreck.
