A state prison inmate was captured Friday afternoon after overpowering an armed guard, stealing a vehicle and leading police on a high-speed chase, prison officials said.

Fabian Valentine, 37, escaped at 11:30 a.m., overpowering a corrections officer and taking the officer's gun at the eastbound Interstate 64 rest stop near Winchester while being returned to Eastern Kentucky Correctional Complex in West Liberty, according to a Kentucky Department of Corrections news release.

Valentine ran into the rest stop's parking lot and stole a vehicle, the news release said. State police pursued at high speed, and the chase ended when the vehicle Valentine was driving rammed a police cruiser, wrecking the stolen vehicle, the news release said.

Valentine was returned to Eastern Kentucky Correctional Complex by state police to finish serving a seven-year sentence for receiving stolen property and possession of a controlled substance.

Kentucky Department of Corrections spokeswoman Lisa Lamb said Valentine could face additional charges filed by Kentucky State Police and the Clark County Sheriff's Department.
