Colorado State Trooper Shot; Suspect Killed

A Colorado State Patrol trooper was critically wounded and the suspected gunman was fatally shot Thursday.

Trooper Eugene Hofacker was rushed to a local hospital after he was shot while approaching the driver-side window of a vehicle stopped on the side of I-70 near Dotsero, according to KMGH-TV.

Officials said that the six-year veteran assigned to the Vail Troop Office was listed in critical but stable condition at Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs.

Garfield County Sheriff Lou Vallario said told reporters told reporters that a second trooper returned fire, killing the suspect.

Vallario said that it was fortunate that there were two troopers who responded to the call and that there were other troopers nearby.

The injured trooper was being treated at Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs where he underwent surgery.

The investigation into the incident is currently ongoing.
