A Massachusetts State Police trooper delivered a baby in an SUV that was pulled over on the side of a road in Boston early Friday morning.
Trooper Michael Close was working a paid detail at Charles Circle around 5:15 a.m. when a Toyota Highlander pulled over and the occupants signaled to him for help, according to WCVB-TV.
Close went over to the vehicle of Heidi and Andrew Cheerman and realized that the woman was in labor and the baby was already crowning.
The trooper retrieved his medical bag, towels and blankets from his cruiser and delivered a baby girl.
"My wife and I have two children ourselves. I told my wife before. I said, 'I want to pay attention in case this ever happens because we are the first responders.' Sure enough, I paid enough attention to help out," he told the news station.
EMS arrived and took the newborn and her mother to Massachusetts General Hospital. Close -- a 14-year veteran of the force -- went to the hospital that afternoon to see the mother and baby.
Alana Juliet weighed in at 5 pounds, 12 ounces.
"There's so many bad stories, you know on TV, and it's just so great to see people come out and pull together to let a miracle happen," Heidi Cheerman said.
