A 26-year-old ex-convict with an extensive criminal history was identified Monday as the motorist who was shot by an Osceola County deputy this weekend after a traffic stop turned into a brawl.
The shooting happened about 5:30 p.m. Sunday after Deputy Michael MacCallum, 30, pulled over a motorist near South Poinciana Boulevard.
The motorist turned out to be an ex-convict known as "King Beast," according to sheriff's records and the state Department of Corrections.
Released from prison in late October, Ridge David White had served five years for lewd and lascivious sexual battery on a 12- to 15-year-old victim, as well as burglary of an occupied home and grand theft, records show.
Now 26, the first of White's 21 arrests began at age 13 when he began breaking into and stealing cars. He's been charged mostly with felony crimes — some violent — in Orange, Osceola, Okaloosa, Pasco and St. Johns counties, according to FDLE records.
Designated as a habitual felony offender and registered sex offender, he was on probation for 10 years and, at the time of the traffic stop, potentially faced being sent back to prison if arrested again.
MacCallum intended to arrest White for an undisclosed drug violation after stopped and questioned him. That's when White fled on foot, according to Lizasuain.
When MacCallum caught up to White a fight broke out but ended when the deputy shot and critically injured the suspect, she said.
White was flown by rescue helicopter to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he remained Monday in an undisclosed condition. MacCallum was treated for non-life threatening injuries at Osceola Regional Medical Center.
A deputy since 2006, MacCallum was placed on administrative leave, which is common when police and deputies are involved in shootings.
