California deputies shot and killed a wanted felon who fatally shot a K-9 last week.

The shooting happened just before 5 p.m. Friday as Riverside County sheriff's deputies responded to a call in Perris concerning a man and woman trespassing on a person's property, City News Service reports. When deputies arrived at the scene, they found a man who was wanted by authorities and set up a perimeter to search for the person.

Rudy, a sheriff's office K-9 involved with the search, located the hiding suspect, who began firing at deputies, Rudy was struck by the gunfire and was taken to a veterinary hospital, where he later died.

During the incident, the suspect refused to surrender, and a sheriff's office helicopter unit tracked him and a woman fleeing toward an occupied house. Deputies confronted the suspects and opened fire when the man pointed his gun at them.

The suspect was fatally shot by deputies. The deputies and the woman were uninjured in the incident, which is under investigation.
