Suspect Destroys S.C. Police Drone, Injures K-9 During Lengthy Standoff

- A Prosperity man was arrested after a 3½-hour standoff during which he allegedly pointed a gun at responding law enforcement officers, destroyed a drone and injured a police K-9.
- The suspect was wanted for questioning in a hit-and-run crash and was taken into custody after authorities used chemical munitions and a South Carolina Law Enforcement Division K-9 to prevent him from reentering his home.
- He faces multiple charges, including pointing and presenting a firearm, malicious injury to property and assault on a law enforcement animal.
Eventually law enforcement took Dameron into custody at 1:30 a.m. Friday.
Dameron has been charged with reckless driving, hit-and-run with property damage, pointing and presenting a firearm, malicious injury to property in excess of $2,000, and assault on a law enforcement animal, pursuant to the new South Carolina law.
Several Newberry County Sheriff’s Office deputies were treated at the scene by Newberry County EMS, Lake Murray Rescue and Fairview Fire Department for exposure to the chemical munitions, the sheriff’s office said.
“You just cannot point a weapon at a law enforcement officer and resist arrest. We are grateful for SLED and their K9,” Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster said. “Without their assistance, this situation may have turned out much worse.”
