Rose and wreath layings were part of the National Police K-9 Memorial Service on Sunday at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C.
Thousands will gather on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., as the names of fallen law enforcement officers will be read during the 37th annual Candlelight Vigil.
While the spotlight of National Police Week is on the human law enforcement officers who lost their lives in the line of duty, the week also honors other officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
On Sunday, the annual National Police K9 Memorial service at National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C., remembered the four-legged officers who have died on the job over the years. The ceremony, hosted by the National Police Dog Foundation, included a wreath and rose laying, and a certificate of remembrance was given to handlers or departments for their fallen K-9s, according to the sponsoring organization's website.
This year, 22 K-9 officers were honored during the service. Check out some of the images from the event.
Started in 1998, the National Police Dog Foundation established its K9 Memorial Fund to help law enforcement agencies that have lost a canine officer. Following a police K-9's death, the organization can assist departments who might have the money to replace the officer.
