WEATHERFORD, Texas — A Weatherford police canine was injured and a suspect killed after an incident with law enforcement Thursday night.

Parker County Sheriff Russ Authier said deputies and a WPD canine officer were conducting a warrant service around 7:30 p.m. on Hancock Drive when the subject of the warrant began firing at officers. The subject was killed when officers returned fire, according to a press release.

The canine suffered a gunshot wound and was taken to a local vet, and expected to recover.

Authier said Texas Rangers will be taking the lead in the investigation.

Weatherford police Friday said K9 Jack was "resting and in good spirits."
