A man wanted on an outstanding warrant fled a traffic stop and was eventually apprehended thanks to a Michigan State Police K-9 that was able to track him across miles to a trailer.

CHARLEVOIX COUNTY, MIA wanted man was arrested after a Michigan police dog tracked him for nearly four miles in Charlevoix County.

The incident began when a trooper from the Michigan State Police Gaylord Post stopped a Dodge Dakota with an unregistered plate on Maple Street in East Jordan at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.

As the trooper approached the truck, the driver sped off. The trooper returned to his patrol car and drove in the direction of the truck, but he did not pursue. Instead, he called dispatch to alert nearby units of the situation.

A deputy from the Charlevoix County Sheriff’s Office located the vehicle behind a residence on Rogers Road. The vehicle was abandoned, and the homeowner said they did not know who the truck belonged to.

A perimeter was established, and K-9 Chief eventually tracked the suspect for nearly four miles to a utility trailer on Fair Road. The driver, a 30-year-old Charlevoix man, was found hiding inside the trailer with a key to the Dakota in his possession.

He was lodged in the Charlevoix County Jail for fourth degree flee and elude, operating an unregistered vehicle and operating a vehicle without insurance.

He also had an outstanding warrant for failure to pay child support, police said.
