WESTBOROUGH, MA—A state police dog successfully tracked an injured woman who had fled from an ambulance on a ramp to Interstate 495 Tuesday morning.
The scene unfolded on the highway ramp from Route 9 onto the highway as passing drivers watched the woman run across the median and jump down to the westbound side of Route 9, police said.
State and local police, including some trained dogs, began searching for the woman.
During the search State Trooper Ken Hanchett and his canine partner Orry began tracking from the ambulance on the ramp. The team had been searching in the wood line along Route 495 for several minutes when Orry showed a change in behavior and pulled toward the highway, wanting to cross to the other side.
State police stopped traffic and the team crossed the road, resuming their track as Orry went down an embankment into the woods where he and Hanchett found the young woman.
The woman was had sustained serious injuries that police believe were self-inflicted after she fled.
Hanchett tied up Orry and began rendering medical aid while also notifying Troop C Headquarters to have an ambulance rush to the scene. With assistance from backup officers, Hanchett brought the young woman out of the woods.
The ambulance crew, with a state police escort, transported the young woman, to UMass-Memorial Medical Center—University Campus in Worcester. Police said she is expected to survive.
