GAINESVILLE, Florida -- An Alachua County Sheriff’s K-9 died after experiencing a medical emergency during training on Tuesday.

K-9 Chief was conducting a simulated track when he fell ill and medical aid was immediately administered and he was transported to the closest veterinarian office in Micanopy, according to a news release.

Chief was eventually transported to the University of Florida small animal clinic for advanced treatment. Despite lifesaving efforts, the K-9 died that night with his handler by his side.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the entire K-9 Unit who were present when Chief went down and we offer our support to his human handler, partner, and friend," Alachua County Sheriff’s officials said in a statement.

Chief -- a 3 year old Belgian Malinois from Europe -- joined the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office in January of 2018. He was certified in drug detection and criminal apprehension. During his 2 years working within the community of Alachua County, he made numerous arrests for crimes including drugs, guns, burglaries, and robberies.

Memorial services for K-9 Chief are pending.
