A Clayton County, Georgia Police K-9 was stabbed while attempting to apprehend a murder suspect Sunday morning.

Officers responded to an apartment complex located on Garden Walk Boulevard around 11 a.m. where a man shot a woman several times in the face, killing her, according to a Clayton County Sheriff's Office news release.

The shooting occurred in front of the woman’s step-father, and the man was able identify the shooter as Randy Young.  The step-father gave officers the direction of flight for the man who was on foot and still armed.

Sheriff Victor Hill contacted the commander of the Fugitive Squad and had him activate the entire unit for the manhunt. Hill and Clayton County Police Chief Kevin Roberts coordinated air support and K-9s for the ground to assist officers and deputies in the manhunt.

Officers and deputies tracked Young on foot to the wooded area behind the H-Mart located on Highway 85 in Riverdale. They then set up a tight perimeter to prevent Young from escaping out of the wood line. Shortly after officers and deputies entered the wood line, K-9 Oldin spotted Young and while apprehending him was stabbed twice in the head with a knife by Young.

Oldin defended himself while being stabbed and was able to bite Young in return, aiding in his apprehension. Young had a gun in his waistband at the time of his arrest.

Oldin was rushed to the closest animal hospital being escorted by police and is expected to survive his wounds.
