Bodycam: Suspect Grabs Va. Police Officer's Gun During Search

A suspect wanted in a domestic violence incident emerged from dense brush and grabbed a Fairfax County police officer's handgun before another officer ended the confrontation with a Taser.

What to Know

  • Fairfax County police searching for an armed domestic violence suspect in a wooded area near an Annandale home were confronted when the man suddenly emerged from heavy brush and grabbed a police officer's handgun.
  • The suspect, Nehemia Fuentes Banegas, allegedly tried to disarm the officer, leading to a struggle during which the officer fired three rounds and another officer deployed a Taser, striking the suspect twice.
  • Fuentes Banegas suffered a non-life-threatening shoulder graze wound, was treated at a hospital and jailed without bond on an attempted disarming of a law enforcement officer charge.

Fuentes Banegas was struck twice by the Taser, Chief Kevin Davis said during a news conference Wednesday. Three shots were fired from the officer's gun, and Fuentes Banegas was grazed in the shoulder, Davis added.

He was rushed to the hospital with injuries that weren't considered life-threatening. Fuentes Banegas was medically cleared, and he is being held without bond on a charge of attempted disarming of a law enforcement officer.

Police used video footage collected by the department's Real Time Crime Center to helped detectives the two knives Fuentes Banegas had been carrying.

The incident is under investigation.
