STOCKTON, California -- Body camera video has been released of an officer-involved shooting last month that left a suspect accused of using an axe to break into an occupied home dead, according to the Stockton Police Department.
On May 4 at approximately 7 a.m., Stockton police officers responded to the 2000 block of Nevada Street after a 911 call reported a male suspect armed with an axe attempting to force entry into a residence. According to police, the suspect, identified as 25-year-old Moises Andrade, allegedly used the axe to cause substantial damage to the front door of an occupied home.
Officers determined during their initial response that Andrade had attempted to enter the residence and may have been en route to another location where additional acts of violence were possible, according to the department.
Investigators said officers later developed information that Andrade was staying at a nearby residence in the 1200 block of Deep Cliff Way. Officers responded to the location and made contact at the front door, where the garage door partially opened and the suspect was observed inside.
Police said officers began speaking with Andrade when he allegedly retrieved an axe that was attached to a bicycle inside the garage and armed himself in front of them. One officer drew a service weapon while another deployed a TASER as a less-lethal option.
Officers issued verbal commands and attempted to de-escalate the situation while creating distance. According to police, Andrade refused commands to drop the axe, assumed a pre-assaultive stance, and raised the weapon in close proximity to officers.
One officer discharged his firearm, striking the suspect, police said.
Officers immediately rendered medical aid until Stockton Fire Department personnel and emergency medical services arrived. The suspect was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. No officers were injured during the incident.
Both officers had activated body-worn cameras during the encounter, according to police, and the Stockton Police Department has since released the footage as part of its public transparency effort.
The Stockton Police Department has initiated a multi-agency critical incident investigation involving the San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Bureau of Investigations, the California Department of Justice, and the San Joaquin County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The investigation remains ongoing.
