CANTON TWP, MI—Nine people were taken to a hospital after a wrong-way crash involving a semitractor-trailer sparked a fire Wednesday afternoon in Canton Township.
The crash happened just before 1 p.m. March 18 at Ford and Haggerty roads near I-275.
Police said a car traveling the wrong way in the northbound lanes collided with a turning semi-truck, causing fuel to spill and ignite. The fire trapped occupants inside their vehicles.
Four responding officers pulled people from the burning vehicles and were injured in the process. Five civilians and the four officers were transported to a hospital. All are expected to recover.
The intersection was closed for several hours as crews worked to extinguish the fire and clear the scene. It reopened around 8:50 p.m., according to police.
Authorities have not released additional details about the crash.
