Florida police officers responding to a disturbance last month encountered unexpected gunfire when a man on a bicycle approached and opened fire.

The incident happened shortly after 12:45 p.m. Feb. 15 when Fort Lauderdale police officers were responding to a disturbance call, according to the department. While officers were handling that call, a bicyclist—later identified as Luis Felipe Londono Ospina, 43—lingered in the area for several minutes before pulling a handgun and firing at police.

Officers ordered the man to drop his weapon, but he continued firing. He then lowered the gun toward officers.

Three officers opened fire at Ospina, striking him several times. Medical aid, and he was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the department's Internal Affairs unit are  investigating the incident.
