Colorado police officers conducting a DUI traffic stop during a frigid evening last month made a disturbing discovery when they found three children hiding in the trunk.

The stop happened at around 5:30 p.m. Jan. 23 when Westminster police spotted a vehicle traveling erratically, the department stated in a social media post that included body camera footage of the incident. During the stop, an officer smelled alcohol coming from the driver, although the man initially denied drinking.

The driver agreed to perform roadside sobriety tests at first, but then declined. After police detained him, the driver told officers that he had children inside the trunk.

Officers opened the trunk to find the kids inside, despite near-freezing temperatures outside at the time of the stop. The children, who were released to family members, were uninjured, and no details were released about why they were in the trunk.

The driver was arrested on multiple charges, including suspicion of driving under the influence, reckless driving and three counts of child abuse. Multiple alcohol bottles also were recovered from the vehicle.
