An Arizona police officer stopped a charging man armed with a machete during a domestic disturbance call last week, fatally shooting the suspect.
The incident happened at around 7:30 p.m. Thursday when a Coolidge police officer was checking on a parked vehicle, KPHO-TV reports. When the officer reached the vehicle, he questioned the woman inside about her shattered windshield, discovering that her husband had caused the damage.
While the officer continued to talk with the woman, her estranged husband—identified as Francisco Canales Aguilar, 54—exited his home armed with a machete and drove to the woman's location. Once he reached the scene, Aguilar began approaching the officer and woman, with the machete in hand.
The officer ordered Aguilar to stop and drop the machete, but he didn't comply. Aguilar then ran toward the officer, swinging his machete and hitting it on the ground.
That's when the officer opened fire and struck Aguilar. Responding medics pronounced Aguilar dead at the scene.
The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the shooting.
