What to know

  • Sandy Springs police used golf carts to pursue and take into custody a wanted suspect who attempted to flee officers on a golf course in a similar vehicle on Christmas Eve.

  • Body camera footage showed officers commandeering a course cart and following the suspect across fairways until he stopped and surrendered.

  • Police later unveiled a marked “Fairway Unit” golf cart, highlighting the department’s readiness for unconventional pursuits.

Police pursuits don't always happen when an offender flees in a car or on foot. Sometimes, officers have to improvise when a suspect picks an unusual mode of transportation to outrace the law.

That was the case for Georgia officers, who had to commandeer a golf cart in order to keep up with a wanted suspect in a similar vehicle.

The chase happened at around 8 a.m. Christmas Eve when Sandy Springs police responded to a golf course to apprehend a suspect wanted in a prior incident, the department stated in a social media post that included body camera footage of the wild pursuit. When the suspect saw officers, he jumped into the best available method of escape at the time: a golf cart.

"Without hesitation, our officers hopped into nearby golf carts and gave chase," the department stated.

In the body camera footage, officers are seen grabbing a cart from the golf course's garage and following the suspect across fairways. The brief pursuit when the suspect stopped short of a green on the course and surrendered to officers.

"Reminder: Golf carts are not a getaway vehicle," the department stated.

No details were released concerning the previous incident involving or what charges he's facing.

On Tuesday, the department posted photos of a golf cart "upgrade" following last week's unconventional chase. Calling it the Sandy Springs Police Fairway Unit, the cart has department identification and even sports blue lights.

"Monitoring golf courses and beyond, because we like to be prepared," the department stated. "And just a reminder… running is never the right move."
