California police apprehended a driver suspected of driving under the influence who tried to make a soggy getaway on foot after crashing into a fire hydrant early Sunday.

Fullerton police responded to the scene of a crash in which a vehicle struck a pole after shearing off a fire hydrant, the department stated in a social media post. Video footage from the scene shows a car stopped in front of a pole as water gushes from a damaged fire hydrant.

The driver had fled on foot and was no longer at the scene when police arrived. But talking to witnesses gave clues to officers.

"When the first officer arrived, a witness offered some solid detective advice: follow the water trail," the department stated. "Sure enough, the soggy suspect was located nearby.

"The water trail led officers straight to the suspect, who then decided running again was the move," the department added. "After a very brief foot pursuit (emphasis on brief), the suspect was taken into custody."

The suspect suffered minor injuries from the crash and was taken to the hospital, KTLA-TV reports. Later, the driver was booked on suspicion of DUI and hit-and-run.
