An armed robbery suspect using a woman as a shield was shot and wounded during a clash with a Houston police officer earlier this month.

The incident happened just after 8:30 a.m. Dec. 1 when police responded to a panic alarm at a check cashing store, according to a department news release. When an officer reached the scene, he found the business' door locked and a man wearing a hooded poncho walking behind an employee.

As the two exited the store, the suspect pointed his gun at the officer. That's when the officer opened fire, striking the suspect multiple times.

Houston Fire Department Paramedics transported the suspect to an area hospital, where he is in police custody. Charges are pending as the investigation continues.

The suspect was rushed to the hospital, where he was taken into custody. He is charged with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon, KHOU-TV reports.

The woman and the officer were uninjured in the incident. The shooting is under investigation.
