What to know

• Volusia County sheriff's deputies say a 36-year-old man stole an unlocked BMW convertible and crashed it at speeds over 100 mph before claiming he had “teleported” into the car.

• The suspect told deputies they had “saved (him) from the aliens,” and he was taken to a hospital before facing grand theft and suspended-license charges.

• Sheriff’s officials reminded residents to lock their vehicles after the owner left the keys inside the unlocked car at a park.

A man accused of stealing an unlocked BMW convertible before crashing at a high speed chase Monday gave Florida deputies an unusual explanation for the alleged theft: He had been teleported into the vehicle.

The wild incident began just before 3:45 p.m. when Volusia County sheriff's deputy responded to a report of a vehicle stolen from a park, the agency stated in a social media post that included body camera footage. The vehicle's owner said he had left his BMW convertible unlocked and the keys in a closed cupholder while he was locking his dog.

Deputies then received a report a few minutes later concerning a crashed BMW on a roadway. At the scene, witnesses told deputies that the BMW's driver had been traveling over 100 mph when the crash happened.

When deputies questioned the driver—identified as Calvin Curtis Johnson, 36—he gave a far-fetched reason for the series of events.

"I teleported or something," Johnson is heard telling deputies in body camera footage.

"It's common. I teleported," he added.

Despite being in handcuffs, Johnson expressed thanks for the deputies' presence.

"You saved me from the aliens, bro," he said.

Johnson was taken to the hospital, and once released, he'll face charges of grand theft of a motor vehicle and driving with a suspended license, according to the sheriff's office.

"Reminder: Please lock your vehicle while you're enjoying our parks!" the agency stated.
