HAYWARD, CA—The Hayward Police Department on Wednesday released footage of a shootout between officers and an armed man last month in a shopping center parking lot.

The incident happened Oct. 8 in the 29000 block of Mission Boulevard, near Industrial Parkway, police said. No one was hit by the gunfire, but the suspect suffered a minor injury to his thumb.

Officers were initially called to the location for a report of a man brandishing a gun.

The footage shows the suspect – identified as 40-year-old unhoused resident Jaime Mejia Lopez – pulling a handgun from his waistband and pointing it at officers as they arrive at the scene. He then crouches behind a parked hatchback and opens fire.

Three officers are also shown firing their service weapons multiple times at Lopez.

The confrontation ends with Lopez tossing his gun toward the officers, who then place him in handcuffs.

Lopez was medically cleared at an area hospital before being booked into Alameda County jail on charges including three counts of attempted murder and possession of a firearm.

The footage was “temporarily withheld to preserve the integrity of the investigation and to ensure justice for all parties involved,” police said in a news release Wednesday.

The police shooting, the city’s first of the year, remains under investigation, police said.
