A Chicago police officer opened fire on burglary suspects after they intentionally rammed a cruiser and pinned the officer inside while allegedly fleeing the scene.

The incident happened at about 3:45 a.m. Sept. 6 when Chicago police responded to a reported vehicle burglary on the city's West Side, WBBM-TV reports. As three suspects fled the scene in a car, they intentionally rammed two marked cruisers.

Body camera footage shows officers ordering the suspects to exit their car. A responding officer was trapped inside one of the cruisers, and that officer opened fire.

A 35-year-old suspect was struck by the gunfire, and he was rushed to the hospital, where he died. A second suspect was arrested at the scene, but another suspect escaped on foot and tossed a firearm, which was later recovered.

Two officers suffered injuries that weren't considered life-threatening, and they were taken to the hospital.

Chicago's Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA), which released body camera footage from the incident, is continuing to investigate.
