Atlantic City Police Officer Matt Schmidt swam into a bay Oct. 15 to rescue an injured stray dog that escaped from animal control in the Venice Park neighborhood.

Schmidt removed his uniform and led the dog about 100 yards back to shore, using a bite pole after it jumped into the water.

The dog, later found in good health, was taken to the Atlantic County Animal Shelter and has not been claimed.
