MAZONMANIE, WI — The Dane County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a 70-year-old man in the town of Mazomanie as a homicide, and an attempted traffic stop of the victim's vehicle in Marinette County ended in a deadly officer-involved shooting.

According to a statement from the Sheriff's Office, at about 11:45 p.m. Thursday (Aug. 28), deputies were sent to 9888 Dunlap Hollow Road in the town of Mazomanie after the victim failed to arrive at a planned dinner with loved ones and couldn't be reached by phone. His 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe was not at the residence.

The Sheriff’s Office issued a statewide alert for the vehicle and any occupants.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation said in a statement that at about 9:10 a.m. Friday (Aug. 29), a Marinette officer attempted to stop the vehicle, resulting in a police pursuit involving multiple law enforcement officers on Highway 41 southbound that resulted in the vehicle crashing near the intersection of Highway 41 northbound and Schacht Road.

The driver exited the vehicle and approached officers. A Marinette County Sheriff’s Office deputy deployed a Taser, which was ineffective, and two Marinette officers shot the person. A sharp-edged weapon was located at the scene.

The person was taken to a local hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.

The Marinette officers are on leave, one was wearing a camera and both officers’ in-car squad cameras were activated during the incident.

All involved law enforcement are cooperating with DCI during this investigation.

DCI ultimately will turn over the investigative reports to the Marinette County District Attorney’s office when the investigation concludes.
