Criminal charges are filed against a 58-year-old West Bloomfield man for allegedly attacking staff at a Planet Fitness facility, attempting to run over a police officer, crashing into several patrol cars and leading officers on a high-speed chase Wednesday.

In a nine-count warrant issued by the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office, Wesley Kihwan Joh is charged with:

  • Assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder
  • Third-degree fleeing and eluding a police officer
  • Two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon – felonious assault
  • Malicious destruction of police or fire department property
  • Two counts of assault/resist/obstruct a police officer
  • Two counts of assault and battery

Assault with intent to do great bodily harm is the most serious of the charges, punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

Joh was arraigned Friday in 48th District Court where bond was set at $500,000 cash/surety. As of Friday afternoon, he was in custody at the Oakland County Jail.

The alleged rampage reportedly unfolded at around 9:30 a.m. Aug. 20 when a 911 call reported a man — later identified as Joh — was punching staff at the fitness facility, located at 6433 Orchard Lake Rd. While officers were en route, they learned Joh was charging at staff with a metal object, then exited the facility and got into a vehicle in the parking lot, where he was met by officers, including one on foot who he allegedly tried to run over.

Joh then drove away — striking several police vehicles — leading officers on a high-speed pursuit which continued on a main roadway and into a residential subdivision, police said. After crashing into more patrol cars, Joh’s vehicle was forced to a stop by officers, and he was arrested, police said.

Joh’s next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 4 for a probable cause conference with 48th District Judge Marc Barron. A preliminary exam is scheduled for a week later.
