Bodycam: Houston Police Officer Shot in Leg in Clash with Gunman

A Houston police officer was struck in the leg when an armed suspect began shooting at authorities investigating a report of a suspicious person along a roadway.

Recently released body camera footage captured a confrontation with an armed suspect who opened fire on Houston police last month, wounding an officer.

The shooting happened at around 11:35 p.m. July 17 when police responded to a report of an armed and suspicious person walking along the road, the department stated in a news release. Officers had gotten out of their cruiser when the suspect began shooting. 

One officer was struck by the suspect's shots, and police returned fire. The suspect was wounded in the exchange, and he and the injured officer were rushed to the hospital.

The body camera footage shows the wounded officer had been shot in the leg, and a tourniquet was applied to the officer at the scene.

The suspect—identified as Bobby Jose Alvarado—was charged with two counts of aggravated assault of a peace officer. The shooting is under investigation.
