A Monday morning shooting at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, Nevada, left three people dead and three more hospitalized, the Reno Police Department confirmed to SFGATE.

The shooting began at 7:25 a.m., when police say a white man entered the Grand Sierra Resort's parking lot from the north side of the property and made his way toward the valet area. Once there, he pulled out a handgun and aimed it at a group of people, police said. Although the weapon initially malfunctioned, the man was able to fix it and then opened fire, striking five people, according to the news release.

The man then ran back through the parking lot, where police said he opened fire on a casino security officer, who returned fire before the man further fled and shot a sixth person inside a vehicle. This person was pronounced dead at the scene.

Reno police officers arrived within two and a half minutes of the initial call, Chief Kathryn Nance said in a Monday press conference. The man allegedly fired at officers, striking a patrol vehicle before being shot by multiple officers and taken into custody, she said. He remains hospitalized in critical condition. Police say he was carrying multiple firearm magazines.

During the shooting, one Reno police officer sustained minor injuries, reportedly from glass fragments, but was not shot. No other law enforcement personnel were reported injured.

Four of the people injured in the shooting were taken to the hospital As of Monday afternoon, three people had died, while two remained in critical condition and one had been released.

The northwest parking lot of the Grand Sierra Resort remains closed as investigators process the scene, but the casino itself is open and accessible through other entrances, authorities said.

"I want to express with my deepest condolences to the victims and their families, as well as our entire community," Nance said in a news release. "Tragedies like this are horrific for any community to endure, not just for the victims, the first responders, and people who were there, but everyone who calls our community home.

"Violence is not acceptable, especially in our public spaces. Everyone has a right to be safe here, and we are committed to ensuring safety in our city. I want to be clear; the suspect is to blame for his actions and is responsible for the tragedies he created."

Authorities have not yet released the suspect's identity or a motive. As of Monday evening, police said there is no known connection between the shooter and the people injured.

The Sparks Police Department is leading the investigation into both the original shooting and the use of firearms by police at the scene, with assistance from the Washoe County Sheriff's Office.
