CLINTON COUNTY, MI – A man was shot at by police after he allegedly broke into one home, stabbed someone and later held another person hostage at knifepoint inside a different home.
Two Bath Township police officers involved in the Saturday, July 12 incident have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard protocol following such incident.
Michigan State Police will investigate the incident in accordance with standard procedures for officer-involved shootings.
Bath Township police first responded to a 2:27 p.m. report of trespassing in the 6000 block of Heathfield Drive.
The initial caller said a suspicious individual was walking through yards and trying to break into vehicles. The caller also said the suspect entered a garage at a neighbor’s residence and was not seen again.
Shortly after, dispatchers received a call from a resident in the 16000 block of Nichols Road who reported he was stabbed by an unknown person who entered his home.
Upon arrival at the home on Nichols Road, officers entered and encountered the victim and suspect inside. Police say the suspect held the victim hostage with a knife to the victim’s throat.
During the encounter, the suspect separated from the victim and fled out of the side door. The suspect was still in possession of the knife and began running from the scene, police said.
The suspect disobeyed numerous orders to stop and continued running. Both officers at scene then fired their service weapons. It’s unclear if the suspect was hit by gunfire.
After, the suspect gained access to a residence on English Oak Drive and locked the door behind him. Officers tried to breach the door to the residence.
The homeowner heard the officers yelling and kicking the door. The resident came to the front door and spoke with the officers. The resident, who was not injured, was removed and evacuated from the home.
The resident didn’t know the suspect was in the home, police said.
Shortly after gaining entry to the English Oak residence, the suspect fled from the residence and ran toward the neighbor’s residence.
One officer discharged his service weapon as the suspect entered the neighbor’s garage. A Taser was also deployed, and the suspect – after a short struggle – was taken into custody.
Each of the victims involved was treated on scene.
The suspect was taken to a hospital for treatment where they are currently in stable condition.
Video footage is being reviewed as part of the ongoing investigation, police said.
