HAMMOND, IN — The man shot dead by Chicago police here Thursday (May 8) evening while allegedly exchanging gunfire following a pursuit from Chicago has been identified as 50-year-old Chicago resident Joseph Navarro.
Navarro died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds and the results of toxicology tests are pending, according to the Lake County Coroner's Office.
An autopsy was reportedly done Friday (May 9).
Chicago police say they responded around 5:49 p.m. Thursday to a report of a person with a gun in the 13400 block of South Baltimore Avenue, which the local coroner's office listed as Navarro's home address.
The suspect, who was wanted on an aggravated battery charge, entered a vehicle and fled into Hammond where he crashed at Dearborn Avenue and Gostlin Street, police said.
"Officers arrived at the above location where they were fired upon and returned fire striking the offender," police reported.
Navarro was taken to St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago where he was reportedly pronounced dead.
"Both officers were transported to a nearby hospital for observation in good condition," police said.
A gun was recovered at the scene, police say.
Chicago police said a "comprehensive use of force investigation" is underway by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability with the full cooperation of city police.
The officer or officers involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for a minimum of 30 days, according to Chicago police.
