A man with a gun was shot and killed early Sunday by officers after a fight broke out in downtown Orlando, the Orlando Police Department said.
The man was identified as 38-year-old Johnathan Angel Flores on Sunday evening.
OPD said Crime Center detectives were monitoring the area of Orange Avenue and Central Boulevard when they observed a physical altercation occur outside Thrive Cocktail Lounge & Eatery at approximately 1:30 a.m. on Sunday. During the fight, detectives observed a handgun fall from the suspect’s pants, later identified as Flores. He picked up the weapon and put it back in his pants.
The Crime Center immediately alerted nearby officers to deploy, OPD said. As officers were responding, the suspect pulled out the handgun and fired a single round into the air. Law enforcement officers gave multiple commands for Flores to drop the weapon but he refused to heed the commands and, in response, officers fired their weapons and shot at the individual.
Flores was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center (ORMC), where he was later pronounced dead. OPD said the suspect had three prior misdemeanor arrests that were all drug-related.
The officers involved were not injured and will be on paid administrative leave, OPD said. FDLE will conduct an independent review of the incident, which will be turned over to the State Attorney’s office. The Orlando Police Department will conduct an internal investigation.
No other information has been released.
The investigation is ongoing.
