Baton Rouge Police homicide detectives are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred early Sunday morning.
At 3:04 a.m., BRPD uniformed officers responded to a dispatched call reporting a disturbance involving an armed male suspect at the Super 6 Inns and Suites at 9901 Gwenadele Ave.
There, officers encountered a 34-year old man in the parking lot. An exchange of gunfire ensued between the man and officers. The man was struck during the encounter and was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased, BRPD reports.
No officers were injured during this incident.
In accordance with standard BRPD policy, the two officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, BRPD says.
In the past, Louisiana State Police have investigated BRPD officer-involved shootings to provide independent oversight, but Sunday morning's shooting will remain an internal investigation, said Lt. L’Jean McKneely Jr., a spokesman for BRPD.
Sometimes we may ask for assistance and sometimes we don’t, he said.
