Video: Ky. Police Officer's Vest Stops Knife when Suspect Stabs Him
Louisville police were talking with a man accused of breaking into a home and breaking windows at an apartment complex when the suspect grabbed a knife and lunged at an officer.
Body camera footage captured a chaotic scene when a driver attacked an Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper on the turnpike before stealing his cruiser, kicking off a chase that ended in a rollover crash.
A Kentucky police officer's ballistic vest stopped a knife when a suspect tried to stab the officer during an apartment confrontation last month.
The incident happened at around 12:30 p.m. April 20 when Louisville police officers responded to a call concerning a man yelling in a Crest Hill apartment complex, WDRB-TV reports. The suspect also was accused of breaking into a neighbor's home and breaking several windows.
When police reached the scene, officers approached the suspect—identified as Ahtume McCollum—and asked about his knife. The conversation continued until McCollum advanced toward the officers.
Body camera footage shows an officer ordering McCollum to put his hands behind his back. The knife McCollum was carrying then fell out of his pocket onto the ground.
McCollum snatched the knife from the ground and stabbed one of the officers in the chest. Fortunately, the officer was wearing a ballistic vest with a plate, which stopped the blade.
Another officer opened fire, and McCollum was struck. He was rushed to the hospital, where he died.
