- A Bismarck police officer suffered an injured knee when he was struck by an SUV and launched several feet over a snow bank into a fence by a fleeing driver, who was fatally shot by another officer.
An Indiana police officer escaped serious injury after he was struck by a vehicle during a chase over the weekend.
The incident happened just before 6:30 p.m. Saturday when Morgan County sheriff's deputies tried to stop a speeding vehicle, according to a social media post by the Brooklyn Police Department. A chase began as the vehicle sped away, but the suspect was able to elude authorities.
The suspect was spotted in Paragon, and a second chase began. When the pursuit reached Brooklyn, police deployed stop sticks to disable the fleeing vehicle, which the suspect avoided by driving into oncoming traffic.
A Mooresville police officer also tried deploying stop sticks near Brooklyn. He was struck when the suspect swerved to avoid the stop sticks.
The officer was rushed to the hospital and later released. Mooresville Police Chief Kerry Buckner told WTHR-TV that the officer suffered a broken thumb and sprains, and he will recover at home.
"He's a little shaken up, but physically, he's good," Mooresville Police Officer Andrew Ballard told WTHR.
The chase continued into Hendricks County, but it was ended near Camby when authorities felt it was posing a danger to the public.
“Mooresville is a small department, and hearing something like that come across the radio, it would worry you because we're all so close here," said Ballard. "It's like having a brother get injured, or a sister get injured. It's nothing you ever want to see.”
