Dramatic body camera footage was released of Kentucky police stopping an armed carjacker after a chase through a crowded Walmart last month.
The incident started at about 12:15 p.m. Aug. 28 when a Kentucky State Police trooper was chasing a vehicle that crashed at an intersection, WLKY-TV reports. One man was apprehended at the scene, but an armed suspect—Randall Allen, 37—fled on foot to a nearby Walmart.
Louisville Police Officer Brandon Brinkley joined the pursuit, and his body camera captured his search through the store. Shoppers tipped Brinkley off to the suspect's location, and the officer chased him out of the store.
Outside the Walmart, the suspect jumped into the passenger side of an occupied vehicle in the store's pharmacy drive-through lane. In the video, Brinkley orders Allen to get out of the van, but the suspect tries to accelerate the vehicle with his hand, but the driver continued to hold down the brake pedal.
Finally, Brinkley opens fire and shoots the suspect through the vehicle's windshield. The unharmed driver then exits the vehicle.
More officers arrived at the scene, and Allen, who was struck multiple times, was pulled from the van. A search of Allen found a handgun.
After leaving the hospital, Allen was arrested and charged on multiple counts, including unlawful imprisonment, robbery and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon.
"We are very fortunate that nobody other than the assailant himself was injured and the woman who was the victim of a horrific carjacking attempting is safe," said Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg.
