Watch Minn. Deputies Save Woman from Home Explosion Wreckage

April 29, 2024
Body camera footage captured two Hennepin County sheriff's deputies pushing through a door blocked by debris to rescue a woman trapped under the remains of a house that had exploded moments earlier.

Minnesota deputies were in the right place at the right time last week to save a woman after a home exploded, and body camera footage captured the incident.

The rescue happened at around 8:45 a.m. April 22 when two Hennepin County sheriff's deputies—Dearest Welwolie and Gregory Granson—heard a loud explosion as they were serving papers in a Richfield neighborhood, KARE-TV reports. When the deputies reached the scene, they saw smoke coming from a home and were alerted to something else.

"We heard someone yelling for help, that's how myself and Deputy Granson ran to the front door to try to see if we can get her out," Welwolie told KARE.

Welwolie as able push open the front door, which had been blocked by debris, and the two deputies were able to pull a woman from the wreckage, according to a social media post from the agency. Footage from Granson's body camera included with the post showed the deputies quick actions as they went to her aid.

"Thanks to our deputies’ attentiveness and quick action, the occupant was able to get to safety and receive medical care," the sheriff's office stated. "We thank our deputies and all responding public safety professionals for their heroic work."

The woman was rushed to the hospital, and she's expected to recover. Granson told KARE that he and Welwolie were just doing what they're trained to do when it comes to keeping the public safe.

"Just the fact that you're there for your fellow human, that you want to help and when something like this happens it's almost—I don't want to say second nature, but you just step in and do what you need to do," he said.
