Video: Mich. Police Exchange Gunfire with Suspect Fleeing Stop

When Grand Rapids police pulled over a car, a backseat passenger jumped out and fled, leading officers on a foot chase before drawing a handgun and opening fire.

Michigan police are searching for a suspect who opened fire on officers while fleeing a traffic stop over the weekend.

The incident happened when Grand Rapids stopped a car just after 11:45 p.m. Saturday, WXMI-TV reports. During the stop, a passenger in the backseat jumped from the car and fled the scene.

Police released body camera footage chasing the suspect through a residential neighborhood. When the suspect stopped between two houses, he drew a semi-automatic handgun and began shooting.

Officers returned fire, but the suspect kept fleeing. No officers were struck by gunfire, and it's not clear if the suspect was wounded in the exchange.

The Michigan State Police is investigating the incident.
