Recently released body camera footage captured an armed man opening fire on two Arizona police officers investigating a vehicle break-in in August.
The incident happened Aug. 14 as Tempe police officers responded to a report of a car break-in, KPHO-TV reports. A 9-1-1 caller told dispatchers that someone had smashed the window of a vehicle and took a book bag from it. It was later learned that the car belonged to the man, identified as John Andreyo, 45.
When police reached the scene, they encountered Andreyo in a stairwell near a restaurant. One officer ordered him to show his hands, but Andreyo wouldn't drop his bag.
Once another officer arrived, drawing his gun, the first officer took out his Taser. Both officers aimed their weapons at Andreyo.
"I can't do this," Andreyo is heard saying in the video before the officer with the drawn gun tells his colleague to tase Andreyo.
The sound of Andreyo loading his handgun can then be heard in the video.
"He's got a gun! He's got a gun!" the officer with the Taser said.
Andreyo began firing, and the second officer return fire. Andreyo was struck multiple times and rushed to the hospital, where he later died.
No officers were injured in the exchange. Police said Andreyo's gun had jammed in the exchange, and it's thought he would've fired more shots if that hadn't had happened.
The department is investigating the shooting.
