Oct. 2, 2023
Columbus police officers were responding to another call when they saw flames shooting from a nearby residential building, and they were able to rescue an elderly woman and evacuate the other units.

An Ohio police rescued an elderly woman from a house fire and helped evacuate other residents from the burning multi-unit building last week.

Columbus police officers were responding to another call early Tuesday when they saw flames shooting from a nearby residential building, WCMH-TV reports. Once they reached the scene, body camera footage showed them searching the residence for people.

One officer found an elderly woman and helped her reach safety. Another officer began waking up residents in other units and helping them escape.

“If they hadn’t been here when they were here doing whatever they were doing up the street, none of us probably would be here today. They saved our lives,” a resident of the building told WCMH.

The elderly woman was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. According to fire officials, the fire was started by an electrical issue.
