A father is grateful for the quick actions of Miami-Dade police officers last month after they rescued his son trapped in a car submerged in a canal.
Recently released body camera footage captured the Feb. 27 rescue. According WPLG-TV, Orlando Borrón and his son, who was celebrating his third birthday, were driving from daycare when Borrón lost control of the car in Princeton.
The vehicle crashed into a canal and began sinking. Borrón was unable to get his son out of his car seat, and bystanders also tried to help before calling 9-1-1.
By the time Miami-Dade police arrived, the car had become submerged, and the boy had been underwater for several minutes. Miami-Dade Police Officer Emanuel Walton III jumped in to the water and pulled the unresponsive boy to land.
“I couldn’t see through the water, basically use touch,” Walton said. “Eventually, I felt the baby seat, the car seat, the child was able to pop up to the top of the car.”
Another officer—Junior Clervil—quickly began CPR, and the boy regained consciousness.
“When the baby started crying, I started crying too because it was the best cry I ever heard in my life,” said Clervil.
Medics rushed the boy to the hospital, and he has since recovered.
