Video: N.J. Police Stop Man Threatening to Jump From Overpass

Body camera footage shows two Cherry Hill police officers patiently building trust with a distressed man before convincing him to step back from an overpass and return to safety.

What to Know

  • Two Cherry Hill police officers spent about 20 minutes talking with a man who had climbed outside a traffic overpass safety fence and was threatening to jump.
  • Officers Jared Colbert and John Casey built rapport with the man while other officers shut down traffic below the overpass.
  • The man ultimately returned to safety and was taken for further care, with the department praising the officers for treating him with dignity and helping protect his life.

Officers Jared Colbert and John Casey were the first to arrive at the scene, and they began talking and listening to the man, trying to build a trusting rapport. While Colbert and Casey—is a member of the department’s Critical Incident Negotiating Team—continued speaking with the man, their fellow officers fellow officers stopped traffic in both directions below the overpass.

Finally, the man returned behind the security fence after roughly 20 minutes. The officers continued to talk to him as he was "on the way to receive further care," according to the department.

"By taking the time to listen and treating the man with dignity, they upheld the department’s commitment to protecting life and caring for people in distress," the department stated. "As part of our mission, the Cherry Hill Police Department is committed to protecting life and property, and we commend Officer’s Colbert and Casey for reflecting our core value of service during this incident."
