Body cameras for ICE officers will be rolled out "as soon as possible" and that at least one officer involved will have a body camera during vehicles stops, the U.S. border czar said Monday.

Border czar Tom Homan told reporters outside the White House that ICE instructors were being trained on how to teach officers on body camera use, ABC News reports. He said the devices had been purchased, but that the spring government shutdown had delayed the rollout.

"As soon as possible, if I had it my way," Homan told reporters about whe officers would receive and begin using body cameras.

Along with training instructors, the agency also has needed to hire more staffers and ensure it has enough storage space for the files. Homan added that the agency also needed to make sure it was ready to handle Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests once body camera videos were available.

When it comes to controversial ICE vehicle stops, Homan said at least one officer must have a working camera during these encounters, and the camera must record the duration of the stop. Vehicle stops had been suspended by the agency last week, but President Donald Trump reversed that policy less than a day later.

Pressure to outfit ICE officers with body cameras comes following recent fatal shootings involving agents in Texas and Maine. In both of those incidents, officers weren't wearing body cameras and the people fatally shot were not enforcement targets.

Homan also said that the FBI would continue to lead investigations into assaults on ICE officers. He disputed reports that such investigations would fall under the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

"As far as I'm concerned, I'm not aware of any change in policy, and I think the FBI and DHS actually pushed back on that story," he said.
