A Webster man was arrested after a chase in which police said the man ran through local school grounds with a loaded gun.

Police attempted to serve Jayvyn Guadalupe, 21, with a protective order on Thursday, according to the Webster Police Department. When officers arrived, Guadalupe was not there.

Security footage showed Guadalupe with a handgun, according to police, prompting a large search of the area.

Guadalupe was spotted on Lincoln Street and three officers attempted to take him into custody, police said, but Guadalupe slipped out of his jacket before being handcuffed and fled.

Guadalupe ran through St. Joseph School property as kids were leaving school, according to police. Two school staff members saw the police activity and ushered the children back inside before putting the school on lockdown.

Police said Guadalupe discarded various items during the chase.

Guadalupe was apprehended and police recovered the items he had left behind, including a knife and a backpack that contained a loaded ghost gun with no serial number. The gun had a live round in the chamber, according to police.

Bodycam footage captured the initial arrest attempt and ensuing pursuit.

In a statement, police cited school staff for taking action to protect the children.

“This event could have very easily had a tragic ending if Guadalupe had entered St. Joseph School,” the statement read. “I cannot say enough about how crucial the actions of the St. Joseph staff were in preventing that from happening.”

Guadalupe was charged with carrying a loaded firearm without a license, carrying a firearm on school grounds, carrying a firearm with a defaced serial number, assault with a handgun, resisting arrest and assault on a family or household member, among other counts.
