A veteran Massachusetts police officer saved a woman suffering a mental health crisis from an oncoming train last week.

The rescue happened at about 6:15 a.m. Friday when Abington police received reports concerning a woman walking in the middle of a street, the department stated in a social media post. When Sgt. Stephen Marquardt responded to the scene, he found that the woman was in distress.

Shortly after Marquardt arrived, the woman walked onto railroad tracks as a train was approaching. That's when Marquardt ran after her, and a struggle ensued as the woman resisted.

Marquardt was finally able to pull her to safety before the train barreled through. The incident was captured on the sergeant's body camera, and the department recently released the footage.

Medics treated the woman, and she was taken to a hospital for evaluation.

"Valor is the quiet decision to risk your own life so another person may keep theirs," the department stated. "Sgt. Marquardt embodies that principle, a true angel in blue."

Marquardt has been with the Abington Police Department for over three decades. The department stated that his actions "demonstrated extraordinary courage and commitment."

"Thank you, Sgt. Marquardt, for your incredible bravery, unwavering dedication, and for setting the standard of what true service looks like," the department added.
