Three NYPD officers saved a teenage girl who jumped in New York City's Harlem River during an emotional crisis Tuesday, with one officer diving into the chilly waters to help get the teen to shore.

The rescue happened at about 2 p.m. when Officers Wilmer Guerrero, Ankit Gupta and Shuaibul Amine responded to a report of a distressed 16-year-old girl who was threatening to jump into the river, amNY reports. A brief search of the area located the girl just she entered the water.

Body camera footage showed the officers running to try to reach her before she leapt, but they couldn't stop her. The officer then cleared a fence, while the teen struggled in the current and screamed for help.

“The only thing that resonated with me was, as soon as she jumped in the water, she was yelling for help,” Gupta told amNY. “All I could hear from her was yelling for help, saying: ‘Help me. Please. I don’t want this anymore. Help me.’ That’s where our training kicked in.”

Guerrero immediately removed his vest and gun belt and jumped in after her. Temperatures that day were in the 40s, with water reaching the 50s. While not freezing, the conditions could still quickly cause hypothermia.

Guerrero told amNY that he worked to keep the girl calm once he reached her. He then guided her to where the other officers were ready to help.

The officers pulled the teen from the water, and she was rushed to the hospital in stable condition. The three officers were uninjured.

“Once you see someone in need, you just do the best that you can,” said Gupta.
