A Florida deputy got unexpected help from a passing rideshare driver who helped chase down a suspect fleeing a traffic stop on foot.

The incident happened shortly before 8:15 p.m. Aug. 16 when Pinellas County sheriff's deputies pulled over a vehicle, according to the agency, which posted body camera footage from the stop on social media. Deputies then began searching the vehicle when they caught the smell of marijuana.

During the search, one of the car's occupant tossed a backpack to another man outside the car. That man caught the backpack and began trying to escape on foot.

Deputies were chasing after the suspect when a rideshare driver in a minivan—someone the agency called "the most legednary rideshare driver in history"—pulled up alongside a deputy and told him to get inside. The deputy complied and grabbed a handle in the backseat before the driver took after the suspect.

The deputy and his unorthodox pursuit partnered eventually reached up to the suspect, who was subdued with a Taser.

To make the incident even more surreal, the released body camera footage showed a game of Mario Kart playing in the minivan's backseat as the chase unfolded "because apparently this driver stays ready for ANY kind of race," the sheriff's office stated.

"Mamma mia, what a save! Thanks again for the lift!" the agency added.
