A New York police officer was injured early Tuesday when his leg was pinned between two vehicles by a fleeing driver who had previously been asleep.
The incident happened shortly after 3 a.m. when Yonkers police checked on the well-being of a driver asleep in his vehicle, the department stated in a social media post that included body camera footage of the encounter. The vehicle had been stopped facing the wrong direction, and its license plates weren't properly affixed.
Officers woke up the driver, but he refused to lower his windows. He stared at the officers before trying to speed away from the scene.
When the driver fled, he struck an officer, whose right leg became pinned between his cruiser and the suspect’s vehicle. The driver continued to drive off, and the injured officer's partner contacted headquarters to report the vehicle's license plate information.
The struck officer was rushed to the hospital with an injured leg. He was released a day and is recovering at home.
"This incident highlights a few things—the dangers of being a Police Officer, the restraint and great work of our Officers, the power of law enforcement technology to be able to apprehend suspects safely, coordination between Police Departments here in Westchester, and the importance of following the orders of Police Officers when you encounter one," the department stated.
