Watch Colo. Police Capture Runaway Kangaroo after 'Hot Pursuit'

Oct. 23, 2024
Durango police had to keep up with a red kangaroo's "hopping speed" in order to eventually capture the escaped marsupial and return the animal to its owner.

Colorado police added to the growing menagerie of unusual runaway animals that law enforcement have had the pleasure of corralling. The latest contribution: a red kangaroo.

According to the Durango Police Department, officers "were in hot pursuit"—a chase the agency said reached "hopping speed"—of a kangaroo that was reported running down city streets Sept. 18. Body camera footage released Wednesday showed an officer with an animal control pole slowly approach the marsupial in the middle of a deserted road.

After that, the footage shows the kangaroo safely "in custody" and even nuzzling the hand of an officer that helped in the capture.

"Someone wandered away for a late-night Cold Stone run?" the department stated in a social media post that included the video. "No worries, the long-legged friend was released to their owner... and we’re seriously reconsidering cardio."

The catch by Durango police comes on the heels of the sheriff in Volusia County, Florida, alerting the public to the same type of animal on the loose after a bear entered a kangaroo's enclosure and it escaped.
